Truck Electrical System Troubleshooting & Repair

Electrical faults are the ones that get parts thrown at them, because the symptom moves and the cause hides. We trace them instead.

The work

Electrical work we do

A no-start gets a battery. The battery does not fix it, so it gets a starter. The starter does not fix it either, and three hundred dollars later somebody finds a corroded ground strap. That sequence is so common it is almost a rule, and it happens because electrical faults are diagnosed by replacement more often than by measurement.

Voltage drop testing, load testing, current draw measurement and pin-level harness checks answer the question properly. On an intermittent fault — the kind that only appears on a hot afternoon, or over a specific stretch of rough road — that discipline is the only thing that works at all.

  • Battery, charging and starting system diagnosis
  • Alternator and starter testing under load
  • Parasitic draw diagnosis on units that die overnight
  • Ground and connection faults, corrosion repair
  • Harness, connector and pin-level repair
  • Lighting, marker and trailer circuit faults
  • Sensor circuit and reference-voltage faults
  • Intermittent fault tracing with live data

When to call

Typical calls

  • A unit that is dead every Monday morning
  • A no-start that has already had a battery and a starter
  • Lights or gauges behaving inconsistently
  • Trailer lighting faults that follow the tractor
  • Fault codes that appear and clear with no pattern

Coverage

Engines and makes

Cummins and Detroit Diesel, including Cummins LNG and CNG alternative-fuel systems, across Freightliner, International, Isuzu, Hino, Autocar.

Electrical diagnosis is billed as time rather than parts, and that is usually the cheaper end of the job. The expensive version is the one where the parts get replaced first.

Straight answers

Electrical Systems questions

Our unit is dead every Monday. Is that a battery?

Sometimes, and often not. A truck that discharges while parked usually has a parasitic draw — a circuit staying live when it should not. That is measurable, and finding it is a great deal cheaper than replacing batteries twice a year.

Can you repair a damaged harness rather than replace it?

In most cases, yes. Pin-level and section repair is standard work and far less disruptive than a full harness replacement. Where the damage genuinely is too extensive, we will tell you that.

Can you find an intermittent fault that only happens on the road?

That is the hard version, and it is done with data rather than guesswork — live parameter logging, targeted circuit testing and reproducing the conditions where we can. It takes longer, and it is the only method that actually resolves them.
