Drivetrain

Drivetrain, Axle & Transmission Service

Wheel-end and axle work is the job most people assume has to go into a shop. With the heavy jacks and tooling on board, most of it does not.

The work

Drivetrain work on site

Drivetrain work is where mobile service either proves itself or falls apart, because it is genuinely heavy. Lifting a loaded Class 8 tractor safely, pulling a hub, setting bearing preload correctly — none of that happens with light equipment. Our units carry the jacks, stands and tooling the work actually requires, which is why axle and wheel-end jobs happen at the yard rather than on a tow bill.

The other half is knowing when not to. A transmission that needs to come out is a shop job, and we will say so.

  • Wheel-end, hub and bearing service
  • Seal replacement and lubricant service
  • Axle and differential diagnosis
  • Driveshaft, u-joint and centre bearing work
  • Clutch diagnosis and adjustment
  • Transmission fault diagnosis, manual and automated
  • Suspension-related drivetrain vibration diagnosis

When to call

Symptoms worth a look

  • Wheel-end running hot or a seal weeping
  • Vibration that changes with road speed rather than engine speed
  • Growling or whine that follows load rather than gear
  • Shifting complaints on an automated transmission
  • Play at the driveshaft or u-joints on a walkaround

Coverage

Engines and makes

Cummins and Detroit Diesel, including Cummins LNG and CNG alternative-fuel systems, across Freightliner, International, Isuzu, Hino, Autocar.

Wheel-end failures are among the most consequential things that can go wrong on a heavy vehicle, and among the most predictable on inspection. Catching them on a PM visit is considerably cheaper than catching them any other way.

Straight answers

Drivetrain & Transmission questions

Do you have the equipment to lift a loaded Class 8 tractor?

Yes. Our units carry the heavy jacks and stands the work requires, which is what makes axle, hub and wheel-end jobs practical at a yard instead of a shop.

Can you rebuild a transmission on site?

No, and we will tell you that up front. A transmission that has to come out is a shop job. What we do on site is diagnose it properly, so you know whether it is genuinely internal before you pay to have it pulled.

Do you service trailer axles too?

Yes. Trailer wheel-ends, hubs and bearings are part of the same inspection scope, and they are frequently where a fleet’s neglected mileage is actually hiding.
